Caustic soda flakes for petroleum refining
How the industry uses caustic soda flakes
Refineries use sodium hydroxide to wash acidic impurities out of hydrocarbon streams — mercaptans (sulphur compounds that cause odour and corrosion) and naphthenic acids. Oilfield service companies also use caustic to control the pH of drilling muds.
- Caustic washing (sweetening) of LPG, gasoline and kerosene fractions
- Removal of naphthenic acids from crude oil and distillates
- pH and alkalinity control of water-based drilling muds
- Neutralisation of acidic gases and equipment cleaning in turnaround work
What to specify when you buy
- Assay 99% min — spent-caustic volumes scale with dilution; strong, consistent feed keeps waste down.
- Low carbonate — carbonate reduces the treating capacity of the lye and accelerates fouling.
- Full dangerous-goods documentation — refineries and oilfield contractors audit supplier paperwork; every shipment of ours travels with COA, MSDS and Class 8 transport documents.
Recommended supply
Refinery and mud-company buyers normally take 99% min flakes in 25 kg bags (offshore and remote sites) or jumbo bags (refinery make-up). Mention HSE documentation needs in your enquiry.
